Rural Development Project through the Diffusion of Aquaculture of Tilapia in the Region of Boeny, Mahajanga, Madagascar

tilapiaThe major means of livelihood of the people of Madagascar are primary industries. Yet the majority of them still face poverty because of food insecurity, inadequate livelihood technologies, and a poor government extension system. Poverty reduction in the Boeny region in northwestern Madagascar is urgently needed because the region suffers from particularly acute chronic poverty. In the region, the supply of fish is insufficient because freshwater fish farming technologies are inadequate. Given this background, IC Net was commissioned by JICA in the Rural Development Project through the Diffusion of Aquaculture of Tilapia in the Region of Boeny, Mahajanga, Madagascar, to disseminate enhanced tilapia aquaculture technologies and improve the livelihood of fish farmers through diffusion of efficient and adequate tilapia aquaculture techniques. IC Net is expected to (i) develop seed production techniques that suit the local conditions; (ii) adapt tilapia aquaculture practices to the local circumstances; (iii) build the capacity of extension workers; (iv) develop farmer to farmer (F2F) programs for local communities; and (v) design a development plan for tilapia aquaculture.
