ICNet's Approach to Rural Infrastructure

Populations of secondary and tertiary urban centers are increasing rapidly in developing countries. Rapid urbanization, if not managed properly, will increase poverty in the estimated one billion people who live in these areas worldwide. At the same time, rapid depopulation of rural areas brings about its own problems. Thus, delivery of social services in these areas requires careful attention to provision of improved and sustainable urban and rural infrastructure. IC Net’s approach toward infrastructure development is holistic and uses performance-based measures to allocate investment in infrastructure contingent on improvement in governance performance. For this to succeed, IC Net experts design and provide local governance institutional strengthening and capacity building so that urban and rural infrastructure serves the citizens’ long term needs. IC Net firmly believes that sustainable infrastructure is best achieved by ensuring that technical, financial, economic, social, gender, environmental, institutional and governance dimensions are integrated in the project design and implementation of rural and urban infrastructure programs.
